He served with the Marines Ben is a retiree of I.B.M. engineer with 35 years of service. He was a member of St. Patrickâ€™s Church, Rockville, MD and a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council # 6793, Olney, Md. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Harry S. & Ella Healy Willard. She was a graduate of Carbondale High School and was a homemaker. She worked for a number of years at the J. C. Penney Co., Carbondale. She was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church, Carbondale and the Bishop Starret Auxiliary. She is survived by a son in law: Donald F. Faatz, Carbondale; 4 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, a great great granddaughter, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter: Dorothy Ann Faatz in 1991; three brothers: Robert A., Francis & Edward Willard; two sisters: Ruth L. Wilson and Harriett Willard. Alexis Scuba December 7, 2009 Alexis Scuba, 90, of Clarks Summit died Monday at the Osprey Ridge Health Care Center, Carbondale. He was the loving husband of the late Betty Jones Scuba, who died in 2001. Born in Simpson, he was the son of the late Metro & Irene Ksenich Scuba. He was a graduate of Fell High School, Simpson. He served as a Sergeant with the Army Air Corp in the European theater during WWII. He was a regional sales supervisor with Dean Phipps Stores and later was employed at Tobyhanna Army Depot where he retired in 1981. He was a member of St. Basilâ€™s Russian Orthodox Church, Simpson; Russian Brotherhood Organization of America and the Disabled American Veterans. Alexis enjoyed music. The family would like to thank the staff of Osprey Ridge for their personal, kind, compassionate and caring service. He is survived by a step son Jim Willcutt and his wife Alice, Kingsley; A brother: Michael Scuba, Mayfield; a sister Olga Scuba, Carbondale; four grandchildren: Lisa, Allison, Shannon and Caitlyn, six great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She had been employed over the years by Gentex Corp., Simpson and Endicott Johnson Shoe of Forest City. She resided for 25 years in New Jersey before returning to Simpson in 1971. She was a avid bowler and reader and enjoyed bingo weekends at Foxwoods Resort. Susan was a member of St. Michaelâ€™s Church, Simpson. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who will be deeply missed. Mark, who died September 12th. Born in Simpson, she was the daughter of the late Justin & Margaret Kovaleski Malefsky. She attended Fell Township Schools, Simpson. She was a homemaker and prior to her marriage she was employed by General Textile, Simpson. She was a member of the Roman Catholic Community of Forest City. Marion enjoyed story telling, reading, gardening, canning, cooking, fishing, camping, playing bingo and rummy and especially spending time with her grandchildren. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother who will be missed. The family would like to thank the VNA Hospice for their kind and compassionate care. The couple had been married for 68 years. Born in Wapwallopen (Luzerne Co.), he was the son of the late George W. & Emma Kieper Stackhouse. He was a graduate of the Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale. He served in the Military Police Battalion of the Army during WW II. He retired as a stereotypist for the Scranton Times. He was a member of the Carbondale American Legion Post #221, and was a member of the International Printing & Graphic Communications Union. Millard was an avid reader and enjoyed playing cards, crossword puzzles and cryptograms. He bowled for over 60 years and was recognized by the Bowling Congress. He was a member of the cycle club at the Carbondale Y.M.C.A. He is also survived by four sons and their wives: Guy M. Stackhouse and Barbara, Vandling; Robert F. Born in Carbondale, the son of the late John and Blanche Lenska Kucharski, he lived in New York City for most of his life. He was a graduate of Fell Township High School and the Parsonâ€™s School of Design, New York City. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. For years he worked as a leading designer for fashion houses such as Gay Gibson, Bobbie Brooks, Jonathan Logan and Leslie Fay. Following his retirement from the fashion industry, he taught design in the New York City school system. Surviving are three sisters, Irene Bambera, Carbondale, Freda Rygiel, Belleville, N.J., and Wanda Oâ€™Neill, Elizabeth, N.J., one brother, Chester Kucharski, Carbondale, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Blanche Anzalone, and four brothers, Walter, John, Stanley and Ted. A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, December 12, 2009 at 11:30 a.m. in St. Mary of Czestochowa Church, Eynon, by his nephew Monsignor Joseph C. Bambera. Rev. Hilary L. Malinowski, S.T.L. October 1, 2009 Reverend Hilary L. Malinowski, Pastor Emeritus of St. Michaelâ€™s Parish, Simpson And a resident of Eynon died Thursday at Mercy Hospital, Scranton. Born in Eynon, on January 24, 1931, the eldest son of the late Leonard & Josephine Urbanowicz Malinowski. He received his early education at Roosevelt Grammar School in Eynon and was a graduate of Archbald High School in 1948 and then attended the University of Scranton. In 1950 he entered St. Maryâ€™s Seminary in Roland Park, Baltimore, Maryland, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1952 and a Licentiate in Sacred Theology in 1956. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 26, 1956 in St. Peterâ€™s Cathedral by the Most Reverend Jerome D. Hannan late Bishop of Scranton and celebrated his first Mass in his home parish, St. Mary Czestochowa, Eynon on May 27th. He served three months in St. Matthewâ€™s Parish, East Stroudsburg, he was assigned to St. Maryâ€™s Nativity Parish in Plymouth, Pa. and remained there for ten years. In May of 1966, he was assigned to Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Parish, Scranton. In 1971, he was appointed interim administrator of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, Dupont. In September of the same year was assigned to Queen of Peace Parish, Hawley, until March 31st, 1973 when he became the pastor of St. Michaelâ€™s Church, Simpson. In May 1987, he was named pastor of the territorial parish of St. Michaelâ€™s which included both Holy Trinity and St. Michaelâ€™s Churches in Simpson. In July 10, 2007, he was appointed pastor emeriti us. In addition to his parochial duties, Father Malinowski served as Dean of the Carbondale deanery from June 2005 to December 2006. Father Malinowski was fluent in both English and Polish. He also served the Dioceses as a priest director for the Pre-Cana Series in the Scranton and as a confessor to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Sisters at Marywood, the Sisters at Saint John the Baptist Convent in Scranton and the Sisters at Sacred Heart Convent in Luzerne. He served the community of Simpson for 34 years. He twice remolded the church building, added a handicap accessible parking lot, built a new rectory and opened new sections in both parish cemeteries. He oversaw the 100 anniversary celebration in 2003 and his leadership could be seen in the yearly parish block party that was known throughout the valley. He will be remembered for his devotion to the priesthood, the Blessed Virgin Mary and for his eloquent and inspirational homilies. He was also an avid golfer and enjoyed many golfing trips to Florida. Father Malinowski was concerned with the education of the parish youth and strongly supported not only the C.C.D. programs but also the parish sponsored Boy Scout Troop and Cub Pack. He was a charter member of the former Simpson Lionâ€™s Club. He is survived by a sister, Carol A. Malinowski, at home; a sister in law: Elizabeth Fuller Malinowski, Olney, MD; a niece Laura Malinowski and her husband Donald Wallace & a nephew Robert Malinowski, many cousins. A former member of the Carbondale Lodge # 249, Free & Accepted Masons. He was an avid fisherman at his cottage at Cottrell Lake. He also enjoyed bowling and was a member of the Archbald Commercial League at Valley Lanes. Joseph Lester Umholtz September 6, 2009 Joseph L. Umholtz, 94, of Carbondale died Sunday at home. He was the husband of Helen Pechota Umholtz, who died March 3rd. Joe and his wife Helen had been married for 62 years. Born on April 3, 1915, in Valley View, Schuylkill County, he was the son of the late Guerney Milton & Flora Estella Wolfgang Umholtz. He was a 1932 graduate of Valley View High School, Valley View. A veteran of WW II, he served in the 819th Engineer Aviation Battalion and took part in the D-Day Normandy Invasion. He was a part owner of Umholtz Manufacturing where he met his future wife. Working in the garment industry for 57 years, he was a skilled and accomplished sewing machine technician and was known for his abilities in fabricating machine attachments. He retired in 1997 from the Ames Manufacturing Co., Forest City. He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, Carbondale for more than 60 years. He served as a Church Elder. His greatest joy was as a member of the church choir where his bass voice could be heard almost every Sunday. He served as an assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 333 for many years and taught a number of Carbondaleâ€™s sons scouting skills. He was a loving and giving husband, father and grandfather. He took great pride and enjoyment in raising his children and spent many hours teaching them a love for the outdoors while camping, fishing and hunting. He looked forward to each and every visit from his children and grandchildren and hearing of their accomplishments. Well liked and respected in the community he left a legacy of family and friends that will miss his smile, laughter and sparkling blue eyes. His was a life of quality as well as quantity. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. The family would like to thank friends, family and the Home Health Care Professionals & Hospice for their gentle and compassionate care and devotion. The couple had been married for 53 years. Born in Simpson, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence & Sophie Roskowski Wasnock. She was a graduate of Fell High School class of 1951. She had been employed by the Big Chief Market, Carbondale and retired from Zazzeraâ€™s Food Market, Carbondale. She was a member of St. Michaelâ€™s Church, Simpson; the Confraternity of Christian Mothers & Guild; Fell Township Golden Age Seniors and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post , Simpson. She was a member of the Womenâ€™s Association and Coupleâ€™s Club of the church. She enjoyed reading, puzzles and music. She cherished attending her grandchildrenâ€™s activities. Lillian Trichilo June 5, 2009 Lillian Trichilo, 82, of Simpson died Friday at Marian Community Hospital, Carbondale after a courageous battle with cancer. She and her husband Joseph L. Trichilo were married on March 5, 1946. Born on February 14, 1927, in Simpson she was the daughter of the late Stanley & Helen Juriewicz Stancavage. She was a 1945 graduate of Fell High School, Simpson. She had been employed as a bookkeeper for Trichilo Wholesale & Convenient Food Mart, both of Carbondale. She also made wedding cakes for many years. She was a member of St. Michaelâ€™s Church, Simpson. Lillianâ€™s hobbies were many, including sewed crafts, an avid reader, puzzles and cards. She was a great cook and baker, and was a potato pancake fryer at St. Michaelâ€™s yearly picnic. She enjoyed bus trips to Atlantic City with her husband and family. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, who was rich in faith, but most of all she was proud of her four sons. She loved with an amazing grace and had a kind and gentle heart. She had a smile for everyone and left a significant mark on many lives. She is also survived by four sons: Joseph & Arlene Trichilo, Simpson; Richard Trichilo, Simpson; Rosella Trichilo, Dunmore; David & Patricia Trichilo, Simpson and Alan & Colleen Trichilo, Uniondale; a sister Mary Shipskey, Groton, Ct.; a brother Winfield Stancavage, Milford, Ct.; nine grandchildren that she adored and three great grandchildren she treasured, nieces and nephews. Blanche was dedicated to her church and loved her Ukrainian Catholic heritage. She was devoted to the church and was active in all church events. She was a loving mother, grandmother and grandmother. She enjoyed gardening, quilting and the Polkaâ€™s. â€œBabaâ€™sâ€ love was unconditional. OBITUARY - REVEREND VALENTINE R. PLEVYAK May 30, 2009 Reverend Valentine R. Plevyak, 92, Pastor Emeritus of Holy Family, Sugar Notch, and a resident at St. Maryâ€™s Villa, Elmhurst, died on Saturday, May 30, 2009. Father Plevyak, son of the late Joseph and Catherine Stoklosa Plevyak, was born in Whiteâ€™s Crossing on September 15, 1916. He attended Carbondale and Fell Townships High Schools graduating from Fell Township in 1935. He then pursued his undergraduate studies at Saint Bonaventure University, Olean, New York, where he was awarded his B.A. degree in 1940. He completed his studies for the priesthood at Saint Bonaventure Seminary, Olean, New York and was ordained to the priesthood on June 3, 1944, in Saint Peterâ€™s Cathedral, Scranton, by the Most Reverend William J. Hafey, D.D., late Bishop of Scranton. Following a summer assignment at Saint Annâ€™s Parish, Tobyhanna, Father Plevyak was appointed assistant pastor at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish, Plymouth on September 7, 1944. In 1956 he was named Vicar Adjutor at Saint Maryâ€™s, Blossburg, and in November of that year he received his first pastoral assignment at the Church of Saint Stanislaus, Old Forge. Ten years later he became pastor of Sacred Heart Church, Mayfield where he was so beloved by his parishioners he was memorialized in a stained-glass window depicting him administering the Sacrament of the Sick. He was then assigned to Holy Family Church in Sugar Notch where he remained as pastor for 14 years before his retirement and appointment as Pastor Emeritus on June 22, 1992. A distinguished alumnus of Saint Bonaventure University, from which he received numerous honors, Father Plevyak served as vice president of the Alumni Association and as national president of the Christ the King Alumni Association. In recognition of his many services he was named â€œAlumnus of the Yearâ€ in 1973 by Saint Bonaventure University, and ten years later he was accorded a similar honor with the â€œ1983 Outstanding Alumnusâ€ award from Christ the King Seminary. In 1987, diocesan classmates and fellow Alumni of Christ the King Seminary established a scholarship in Father Plevyakâ€™s name for students from the Scranton Diocese who are studying at the Franciscan-sponsored House of Studies at East Aurora, New York. In the Diocese of Scranton, his contributions to Polish religious and civic events in Northeastern, PA earned him the distinction of being named â€œMan of the Yearâ€ at the Friends of Poland dinner in May 1993. An outstanding athlete, Father Plevyak was named to the Hall of Fame by the Luzerne County Chapter, Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1991. He was an outstanding center fielder with high school and semi-pro teams and he was rated among the top prospects for a professional career by baseball insiders. While receiving numerous offers from Big League teams, he rejected them in favor of continuing his education at Saint Bonaventure University at Olean, NY and pursuing his studies for the priesthood. A natural athlete he was also an outstanding bowler and lists a 299 ABC-sanctioned game as one of his proudest moments. He was also an outstanding golfer with several trophies. During his years in the priesthood Father Plevyak also served on the Marian Commission and the Diocesan Senate of Priests. He served on the Board of Directors of Mercy Health Care Center in Nanticoke and as chaplain of the Boy Scouts and the Junior Catholic Daughters. He was very active in the Lions Club and offered benediction at a Lions International Convention in New Orleans. He also dedicated the Whites Crossing to Jermyn section of the Casey Highway. He is survived by three brothers: Bernard, Scott Township; Chester, Phillipsburg, NJ; Thaddeus, Scranton and a sister: Helen Mongelia, Carbondale; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by five brothers: John, Frank, Raymond, Joseph & Stanley and a sister: Anna Pilny. A viewing will take place at Villa Saint Joseph, 1600 Green Ridge Street on Tuesday from 2 to 5 PM. John loved all sports and over the years was active in Baseball, Bowling, Golf, fishing and hunting. He was a fan of the Yankeeâ€™s and the Giants. He enjoyed his trips to the casinos. Helen Pechota Umholtz March 3, 2009 Helen P. Umholtz, 85, of Carbondale died Tuesday at Marian Community Hospital, Carbondale. She and her husband of 62 years, Joseph L. Umholtz, were married on July 2, 1947. Born on March 1, 1924 in Binghamton, NY; she was the daughter of the late Nicholas & Caroline Parkola Pechota. She was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale. She was employed by the Arcade Restaurant in high school and then became an employee of Umholtz Manufacturing where she met her husband. She was later employed for many years in the garment industry. After her children had grown she became a nurseâ€™s aid at what was the St. Josephâ€™s Hospital, now Marian Community Hospital. She was a former member of St. Johnâ€™s Russian Orthodox Church, Mayfield and an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, Carbondale for more than 60 years. She served as a member of the Presbyterian church Sessions and the Deacons and was President of the Womenâ€™s Association for a number of years. She enjoyed planning and preparing meals for the church and was known for her cooking skills. She was a loving and giving wife, mother and grandmother. Helen took great pride and enjoyment in raising her children and participating in their school activities. She served as both a Cub Scout Den Mother and girl Scout Troop Leader. She enjoyed many camping and fishing trips with her family and was known on occasion to out-fish both her husband and son. She was an avid gardener and had beautiful spring bulbs gardens. She frequently cut her flowers to make arrangements for various people and church activities. One of her joys was finding the first crocus blooming each year. She looked forward to each and every visit from her grandchildren and hearing of their accomplishments and cherished their moments together. Together they would spend many hours cooking and baking in her kitchen. The family would like to thank family friends and the nursing staffs of Marian Community Hospital and Home Health Care Professionals & Hospice for their gentle and compassionate care and devotion of both Helen and the family. She is also survived by a daughter, Twila Umholtz-Colville, State College; a son Joseph R. Gary M. Gardner February 22, 2009 Gary M. Gardner, 51, died in his Greenfield Twp home late Sunday evening. He did not lose his battle with pancreatic cancer but rather won lifeâ€™s final fight and went home. His loving wife for the past 32 years is the former Christine Carey. Born in Carbondale, he is the son of Thelma Pierce Gardner Keen and stepson of George Keen, Greenfield Township and so of the late Maurice Gardner. He was a 1975 graduate of Lakeland High School. He was employed by Greenfield Township for 29 years, where he had the privilege of working outdoors and meeting more friends than one could count along the way. He was a lifelong member of the Finch Hill Baptist Church. Gary had two passions in life, his family and hunting. Difficult to tell which he loved more, it is no surprise that his familyâ€™s best memories of him stem from his many hunts, from their backyard to Big Sky Country. Gary had a genuine respect for all of nature and taught his children the same adoration. Garyâ€™s love will endure forever. Also surviving are his two children Maurice Raymond and Katlyn June, both of Greenfield Township. Maurice is a junior Structural Engineering major at Penn State Capital, and Katlyn attends the University of Scranton as a sophomore Health Administration major. His son was his lifelong hunting buddy and friend, his daughter was his princess from their start. They will carry him in all that they do and everywhere they may ever go. He was their greatest teacher. He has a older brother Bruce Gardner, Greenfield Twp.; five step brothers: George, Russell, James, John and Brian Keen all of Tompkinsville, and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews. Gary was preceded in death by three grandparents, Raymond Pierce, Jesse Gardner and Antoinette Hurd Gardner. It gives his family nothing but joy in acknowledging their reunion in Paradise. Oliver R. Shifler February 6, 2009 Oliver Reynolds Shifler, 74, of Ellenton,FL and formerly of Carbondale died Friday evening at Tidewell Hospice, Palmetto, FL. His wife is the former Kathryn Helen Wood. Born in Carbondale, he was the son of the late Oliver H. & Florence Reynolds Shifler. He was raised in Carbondale and Waymart and spent summers at the family home in Elkdale (Susquehanna County). He was a graduate of Waymart High School and American Academy of Mortuary Science & Research, New York City in 1953. In his earlier years, he was a rural mail carrier. He was the third generation funeral director of the Shifler family, who established their business in 1884 in Nicholson. The family moved to Carbondale in 1900. Ollie was very active in the family business and the ambulance service they had in addition to the livery service they provided to many area funeral homes. In 1970, Ollie purchased the Carbondale funeral home and business from his father. He also operated funeral homes in Waymart and Damascus. In 2005, Ollie was honored by the Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association for 50 years of service to the public. He was a member of the Carbondale United Methodist Church where he was a choir member and was a past president of the Triple M Club. He was also a past president of the Waymart Lionâ€™s Club; a past president of the Tri County Funeral Directors Association and a member of the Free and Accepted Masons, Waymart Lodge. He was a quiet and likable guy who was know for his dry sense of humor and wit. He is also survived by four sons: Charles C. Shifler and Dale R. Shifler both of Forest City; James Hilton, Waymart; Robert Hilton, Greentown; two daughters: Sandra R. Pasterchik, Delphos, Ohio; and Kim DeEsch, Canadensis; grandchildren, nieces and nephews. David Edward Hadden, Jr January 22, 2009 David Edward Hadden, Jr, 52 of Carbondale died Thursday at the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown , after a courageous battle with a brain tumor. His wife is the former Barbara â€œBarbieâ€ Obloshny. The couple had been married for nine years. Born in Honesdale, he was the son of Evelyn Eldrid Miller, Prompton and the late David Edward Hadden, Sr. He attended Honesdale High School and served with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. He had been employed by Stafursky Trucking & Paving, Archbald and was the log truck driver for Torch Lumber Mill, Carbondale. Dave will be sadly missed by everyone and will certainly never be forgotten. He was always up to a challenge and was always there to help rain or shine. If it had a steering wheel and tires, he could drive it. If it needed work, he got it running. He had a very special bond with everyone he crossed paths with one way or another. He was definitely one of a kind, you just had to love him. Many people either heard one of his stories or could tell one about him. His hobbies included, horse shoes, darts, pool, riding motorcycles, camping, hunting, quading, snowmobiling, drinking beer and smoking cigarettes. Most of all he loved spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and friends. He is also survived by four children: Susan Marie and her husband Robert Principal, Gouldsboro; June Marie Sanderson, Carbondale; Monica Marie Hadden and her fiancÃ© Evan Styer, Jr-Simpson; Lawrence Edward Hadden; Carbondale; four grandchildren: Savannah, Austin, Patrick and Benjamin. Mildred J. Chubb January 15, 2010 Mildred J. Chubb, 93, formerly of Carbondale died Friday at the Forest City Nursing Home. She was the widow of Ervin A. Chubb, who died in 1995. Born in Carbondale, she was the daughter of the late Lewis G. & Nettie Corey Robinson. She was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale, the Moses Taylor Hospital School of Nursing, Scranton. She received additional training in maternity & obstetrics at Cornell Medical Center, New York City and pediatric instruction at Childrenâ€™s Hospital of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. She was a nurse in the office of Dr. John W. Keyes, Carbondale for 25 years. She was a life member of the Berean Baptist Church, Carbondale; where she was a former Sunday School Teacher. Mildred was also a past president of the Carbondale Business & Professional Womenâ€™s Club. The family would like to thank the staff of the Forest City Nursing Home for their compassionate and excellent care of Mildred. She is survived by a daughter Gail and husband Thomas Henry, Carbondale; a grandson Gary Henry, Carbondale and a great granddaughter: Elizabeth; two sisters: Janice M. Nooney Toms River, NJ; Bette Lou Burdick, Easton, PA. She was preceded in death by three brothers: Dean, Kenneth & Keith Robinson; a sister: Doris Collins. The funeral will be Monday at 10 AM in the Oliver R Shifler Funeral Home, Inc. 62 North Main St., Carbondale with services by the Rev. Dale E. Pepper, Pastor of the Berean Baptist Church. Interment in Glen Dybery Cemetery, Honesdale. Friends may call Sunday 4 to 8 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Berean Baptist Church, Lincoln Ave., Carbondale.
